How & When to Enroll in Medicare
Understanding when to enroll is just as important as what to enroll in. Missing your window can mean permanent penalties.
Medicare Enrollment Timeline
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) Begins
Your IEP is a 7-month window. Sign up at ssa.gov, call Social Security (1-800-772-1213), or visit your local SSA office.
Coverage Can Begin
Enroll in the first 3 months = coverage starts your birthday month. Later = delayed start.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
Employer group coverage lets you delay Part B without penalty. When it ends, you get an 8-month SEP. COBRA and Marketplace do NOT count.
General Enrollment Period (GEP)
Missed your IEP? Sign up during GEP. Coverage starts July 1. Late penalties may apply.
Choose: Advantage or Supplement
